Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project Gets Green Light for 5.5 km Extension, Responding to Public Demand

State Government Approves Additional Stretches on Ranjanakunte-Heelalige and Whitefield-Kengeri Corridors

In response to public demand, the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project (BSRP) is set to witness a significant extension of approximately 5.5 km, with the State government granting approval and seeking consent from the Centre. The expansion will impact two key corridors: Ranjanakunte-Heelalige (Corridor 4) and Whitefield to Kengeri (Corridor 2).

Sources indicate that the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT), representing the State government, proposed the extension, with the Heelalige corridor (Kanaka Line) likely stretching nearly one km up to Chandapura. Simultaneously, the Kengeri stretch (Parijata line) is expected to be prolonged towards the Challaghatta side, though the exact distance will be determined following a feasibility study.

A DULT official emphasized that the proposed extension is currently estimated at around 4.5 km, pending the completion of the feasibility study. The Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Enterprises (K-RIDE), the nodal agency overseeing the project, has accepted this proposal and is forwarding it to the Railway Board through the South Western Railway (SWR) for final approval.

Railway activist Pruthvin Reddy revealed that local residents advocated for the suburban line extension during a visit by Social Welfare Minister Narayanaswamy to Anekal, Heelalige, and Huskur railway stations. Larsen & Toubro Private Limited recently secured the contract for the 46.88-km Kanaka Line.

In a related development, a senior K-RIDE official disclosed that the proposed extensions were part of the 452-km Phase-2 project. The initial pre-feasibility study faced rejection from SWR in November 2023, prompting a resubmission of the same proposal on December 28, 2023. If SWR declines again, K-RIDE intends to submit a fresh proposal to the Railway Board through them, seeking approval for the additional 4.5 km extension, which has already received the State's nod. The fate of this crucial rail project now hinges on the Centre's approval.
