Bengaluru Embarks on Ambitious Tunnel Road Pilot Project to Tackle Traffic Woes

Governor Announces Rs.2,000 Crore Initiative Amidst Controversy and Calls for Central Support

Bengaluru, January 28, 2024 - In a bid to address the long-standing traffic congestion in Bengaluru, Governor Thawarchand Gehlot unveiled plans during his Republic Day speech for the construction of a two-kilometre tunnel road as a pilot project. If successful, the initiative is set to extend to other critical areas of the city.

Governor Gehlot stated, “To find a permanent solution to the congestion of Bengaluru city, it is proposed to construct tunnel roads at selected places.” The Detailed Project Report for the 2 km tunnel road, with an estimated cost of Rs. 2,000 crore, is currently in preparation with the assistance of an international agency.

Acknowledging concerns over the substantial expenditure, the State Government, led by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, is determined to proceed with the project. Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar emphasized the urgent need for a comprehensive solution, stating, “Bengaluru is one of the most traffic-congested cities globally, impacting the mobility, productivity, and environment of the city.”

The tunnel road project, conceptualized by Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar, aims to create a 60 km urban tunnel, connecting major arterial roads in East-West and North-South corridors. This ambitious undertaking carries an estimated cost of Rs. 30,000 crore, equating to Rs. 500 crore per km. Despite criticisms, the State Government remains resolute, seeking support from the Centre to bring this transformative vision to fruition.

In parallel efforts to improve traffic flow, the State Government has initiated a Rs. 2,000 crore project for white topping major roads, further highlighting their commitment to comprehensive development and smoother traffic management in Bengaluru. As the tendering process begins, the success of these initiatives could pave the way for a paradigm shift in addressing the city's perennial traffic challenges.
