Inauguration of India's Longest Sea Bridge: Atal Setu Connects Mumbai with Navi Mumbai
PM Modi Unveils Mumbai Trans-harbour Link, Enhancing Connectivity and Reducing Travel Time
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Mumbai Trans-harbour link (MTHL), now officially named 'Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewari-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu', at a cost of over Rs 17,840 crore. Spanning 21.8 km, this six-lane bridge, featuring approximately 16.5 km over the sea and 5.5 km on land, is now recognized as the longest sea bridge in India.
The bridge, whose foundation stone was laid by PM Modi in December 2016, aligns with the Prime Minister's vision to enhance citizens' 'ease of mobility' by fortifying urban transport infrastructure and connectivity. It aims to provide faster access to Mumbai International Airport and Navi Mumbai International Airport, while also reducing travel time to Pune, Goa, and South India.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde emphasized the project's significance, stating that the MTHL would stimulate development in Navi Mumbai and surrounding areas. This 22-km long Mumbai Trans Harbour Link connects South Mumbai to the new Navi Mumbai airport and Mumbai-Pune Expressway, significantly improving connectivity and reducing travel time from two hours to just 20 minutes.
To ensure safety, the Mumbai police implemented speed restrictions on the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, citing potential dangers and inconveniences. The toll rates for the bridge have been set at Rs 250 for a one-way trip and Rs 375 for a round trip, making it India’s most expensive toll road connected to Mumbai. The state government plans to review the toll after one year, while a monthly pass for the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link is priced at Rs 12,500 per month.
